People researching courses for the computer or IT industry will quickly become aware of the variety of courses in existence. In the first instance, look for a training organisation with a team of advisors, so you can be fully informed on the job roles your new knowledge will help you to get. It’s possible you’ll learn about job roles you didn’t know about.
Why not try Microsoft User Skills packages, or take a career track and specialise. Easy to follow courses will help you achieve the goals you set yourself.
With such a range of competitively priced, easy-to-use courses and support, you should inevitably find something that will take you to your destination.
Trainees looking at this market are usually quite practically-minded, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this is putting you off studying, try the newer style of interactive study, with on-screen demonstrations and labs.
Memory is vastly improved when multiple senses are involved – this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for many years.
Modern training can now be done at home via interactive CD and DVD ROM’s. By watching and listening to instructors on video tutorials you’ll learn your subject by way of their teaching and demonstrations. Then you test your knowledge by utilising the practice lab’s and modules.
It’s wise to view a small selection of training examples before you make your decision. Always insist on videoed instructor demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.
It’s usually bad advice to opt for on-line only training. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across your average broadband company, ensure that you have access to CD or DVD ROM based materials.
A knowledgeable and specialised advisor (vs a salesman) will talk through your current situation. This is useful for establishing your starting level of study.
Occasionally, the starting point of study for a person experienced in some areas is often vastly different to the student with no experience.
If this is going to be your initial stab at an IT exam then you should consider whether to start with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.
Most commercial training providers will only offer office hours or extended office hours support; most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends.
Email support is too slow, and telephone support is usually to a call-centre who will just take down the issue and email it over to their technical team – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), when it suits them. This is not a lot of use if you’re stuck and can’t continue and have a one hour time-slot in which to study.
As long as you look hard, you will find the very best companies who give students direct-access support at all times – even in the middle of the night.
If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. You may not need it throughout the night, but what about weekends, late evenings or early mornings.
Always expect the very latest Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) authorised exam preparation packages.
Because most IT examination boards are from the USA, you need to become familiar with their phraseology. You can’t practice properly by simply going through the right questions – they need to be in the proper exam format.
You should make sure you analyse your depth of understanding by doing tests and mock ups of exams before you take the real deal.
Be on the lookout that any certifications you’re considering doing will be recognised by employers and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are often meaningless.
Only nationally recognised accreditation from the major players like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco and Adobe will open the doors to employers.
