Everyone seems to be trying to lose weight these days and for some people it’s a slow metabolism that’s to blame. But how can you speed up a sluggish metabolism? Here are some facts about metabolism that may help you do it.

One key way to speed up your metabolism is to eat healthier foods. This doesn’t sound intuitive but junk food actually slows down your metabolism. All that sugar and fat tend to make your body go into stall mode. Carbohydrates, fatty food and junk food all have a slowing effect on your body.

Probably the best way to put your metabolism into overdrive is through exercise. For the best results try to combine anaerobic exercise like lifting weights with aerobic exercises that get your heart pumping. If you alternate exercises from day to day you keep from getting bored and also give your muscles time to rest and grow. Bigger, stronger muscles will also burn more calories even while you’re asleep.

Try not to eat before going to sleep. If you can get your last meal in 3 hours before you go to bed your body won’t be working on digestion while you’re asleep and everything slows down. If you don’t need the energy at the moment there’s an increased chance that meal you ate will get stored as fat.

Most people aren’t aware how important sleep is for metabolism. People who are sleep deprived experience an increase in blood sugar levels and that interferes with the your bodys’ ability to metabolize carbohydrates. Also, when you don’t get enough sleep your body increases production of cortisol which makes you feel hungrier. You need sleep for healthy functioning and that includes your metabolism.

These are just some of the things you can do right now to get your metabolism going. You’ll feel stronger and look better because your body will be running at peak efficiency.
