The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest single nerve in the human body. It runs not so aimlessly from the base of the spine and ends in both feet with a gigantic fall. Knowing this certainly helps one understand how sciatica pain works. Indeed, it follows the exact same path as the sciatic nerve with pain stretching right to the feet. Causes for this type of pain are standing or sitting for long periods of time, overstretching, and in some cases lifting weights. But whatever the cause is a sufferer will definitely want relief for sciatic pain symptoms like numbness and itchiness.

The itchy and sometimes hot pain in the lower back and legs can best be relieved with exercise. Stretching exercises targeted at the hamstring are one of the best forms of nerve pain treatment. Lie on your back; hold the back of your thigh and lift your leg at a 90 degree angle. Switch legs and do this continuously for a good ten minutes with breaks in between.

There is also the psoas stretch that I recently came across on a website on the internet. This exercise again requires you to lie on a bed. But this is different from the hamstring stretch in that while you lie on your back you hold your knees and pull them in close to your chest. Once your knees are close to your chest you should hold your pose for a minute. Do this for five minutes and you will soon notice how the itchiness in the lower back begins to go away.

Acupuncture is a form of physiotherapy whereby hair thin needles are pressed into skin pores to relieve tension related conditions. Try acupuncture of the lower back, right down to the feet. The flow of blood and energy is almost instantly increased and the result is a mild comforting feeling that comes quicker than the knockout feel of an anesthetic.

Ice packs are used effectively by some people for sciatic nerve pain treatment. They apply the ice packs in the areas affected by pain to numb any acute pains associated with sciatic pain. An alternative is using ice packs together with heat packs. This combination is the perfect remedy as it stretches the muscles with no physical effort applied.

If all these don’t work you can try your hand at massage treatment. The good thing about a massage is that it helps to boost the flow of blood around the back and legs. Sciatic pain sometimes originates from an inhibited flow of blood caused by improper sitting habits or lifting of heavy weights. A massage also encourages the release of endorphins, the feel good hormones.

Pharmaceutical drugs may have to be used as a last resort at getting relief for sciatic pain. Anti inflammation drugs like naproxin help to reduce the extent of any form of swelling. Injections are also used in affected areas to quicken pain relief. Try out epidural steroid injections to relieve pain faster.

Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the lower body from the hips through the legs. It’s the result of pressure being placed on the sciatic nerve, located at the base of the spine. Fortunately, the condition isn’t life threatening and it’s not difficult to manage the pain. Learn more at Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment.
