The time comes when your little kid becomes a teen and wants to drive like others. This should have been a clearly joyous moment but for some reasons, it’s filled with mixed feelings. Apart from safety concerns (we all know that teen driver statistics are far from pleasant), there are also money issues. Add gas costs! Worse still is the fact that the family’s auto insurance spend is going to increase by as much as three times just because of one driver — albeit their beloved kid. Is there anything your teen can do to help you cut down costs? A lot! Here are those steps…

I will list several things and then dwell more on just one (the last point)…

1. It would help if you made it a family policy that your teen pays part or all of his/her premium. If you do this, you’ll find that your teen will be more like to take any advice from you that will help them drive down their payments (And such usually keep them safer too).

2. Make him/her a secondary driver on your oldest car (Such a car should be ok without comprehensive and collision coverage).

3. Don’t allow your teen to learn driving from fellow teens. If that has, unfortunately, already happened, let them go for a class in defensive driving. Auto insurance providers have a favorable bias to teens that do this.

4. Encourage your teen to maintain straight A’s or a minimum of B’s. Insurance companies have the belief that kids who maintain good grades are far less prone to recklessness behind wheels.

5. Make sure your teen drives a car that has all the recommended safety gadgets/features.

6. Reduce the time your teen spends behind wheels to the minimum. Let the use the mass transit as often as possible. It will cut down mileage and reduce your rates. This is without counting the precious dollars you’d save on gas.

7. Teens grew up with the internet and so are usually very good at finding their way around it. Therefore, put them to good use…

More often than NOT, your teen will more gladly shop for auto insurance quotes from a wide range of insurers. They have the time and skill to do this.

Let them know that you’re looking for the best rate that also gives you the right protection. Let them get and compare quotes up to five reputable sites.

They should make a list of about five of the best quotes returned. You can go through those short listed and make the final decision. This simple action will save you several hundreds in premium dollars.
